The following is a listing of recalls from various manufacturer's computers, notebooks and peripherals that have been announced.  If you have one of these products and need further information, please feel free to call us at 1-800-910-4272.

Apple Notebooks

  1. Problem: Apple Computer is recalling 570,000 power adapters used on some older PowerBook models, shipped from May 1998 until March 2000, after reports that the brick-shaped units can overheat, creating a potential fire hazard.  Apple is providing a free replacement power adapter.  Apple is urging customers to order a replacement adapter immediately and not to leave their current AC adapter unattended while plugged into any power outlet.  The recall only includes AC adapters with a two-prong connection, which were designed for use in North American, Japan, Latin America and Asia.  Not being recalled is another adapter, one with a three-prong connection, that was used in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.  The label located on the side of the adapter being recalled reads, "Macintosh PowerBook 45W AC Adapter" and lists the model number as M4402.  Those with the recalled adapter are asked to enter their laptop's serial number on Apple's Web site and provide a mailing address where a replacement can be sent.

The affected notebooks include:

  • PowerBook G3
  1. Problem:  Apple Computer is recalling 128,000 notebook computer batteries used on some  iBook and PowerBook models.  An
    internal short can cause the battery cells to overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers.  Apple recommends that consumers should immediately cease using series of batteries in question.  The recalled lithium ion batteries were manufactured by LG Chem Ltd., of South
    Korea and assembled in Taiwan and China.  Batteries recalled include those with model numbers A1061, A1078, and A1079 and serial
    numbers that begin with HQ441 through HQ507 or 3X446 through 3X510.  Apple has established a Web site and telephone number for
    consumers to use to exchange the batteries for a free replacement.  The site link is here.

The affected notebooks include:

  • iBook 12" G4

  • PowerBook 12" G4 and 15" G4

    3.  Problem:  Apple is recalling 1.8 million battery packs for its iBook and PowerBook notebook computers due to an
         heating problem.

        The cells in the lithium-ion batteries in the iBook G4 and PowerBook G4 computers - the only two models affected by the recall - were
        produced by Sony.   Apple has received reports of batteries overheating, including two reports of minor burns from the computers.

        The affected notebooks include:

  •   iBook G4
  • PowerBook G4

 

Brother Printers

  1. Problem: Brother International is recalling 100,000 multifunction printers and laser printers which may overheat and cause fire.  The printers were sold in the U.S. between June 1997 and December 2000.  Brother recommends that you immediately stop using the printers and bring it in to an authorized service center for a free repair.  For more information, or to find a repair center, contact Brother toll free at

The affected printers include:

  • Laser printer models: HL-1040, HL-1050, HL-1060
  • Multifunction model: MFC-P2000

Dell Notebooks

  1. Problem: Some notebook power brick adapters sold during a four-year period can overheat and pose a shock and fire hazard.  The adapters were sold with Dell Latitude, Precision, and Inspiron notebook computers between September 1998 and February 2002.  The power adapters were made by Delta Electronics in China and Thailand and carry the identifiers "Dell" and either P/N 9364U, P/N 7832D, or P/N 4983D on the back of the adapter.  If you have one of these adapters, Dell advises that you immediately stop using it and contact the company for a free replacement.  For more information call Dell at 800-418-8590 between 9am and 6pm central time Monday through Friday, or visit www.delladapterprogram.com.
     

    The affected notebooks include:
     

    • Latitude CP, CPi, CPiA, CPtC, CPiR, CPxH, CPtV, CS, CSx, CPxJ, CPtS, C500, C510, C600, C800, C810, V700, C-Dock, C-Port.
    • Inspiron 2500, 2600, 3700, 3800, 4000, 4100, 4150, 5000, 5000e, 7500, 7550, 8000, 8100, Advanced Port Replicator, Docking Station
    • Precision M4

     

  2. Problem: Dell is voluntarily recalling power adapters from 28,000 notebook computers that can pose a shock hazard when using power cords not intended for these adapters.  "Dell" and "Dell P/N W1451" is printed on top these adapters.  They were sold as an option from December 2003 through May 2004.  Free retrofit kits are provided by the manufacturer.  These retrofits will prevent incorrect cables from being connected to the adapters.  In the meantime, consumers should only use the power cables intended for these adapters.  Call Dell toll-free at 888-245-3844 between 9am and 6pm central time Monday through Friday to order free retrofit kits.  Consumers also can write to Dell Inc., RR2E, MSC #8222, One Dell Way, Round Rock, TX 78682.  Additional information can also be found on Dell's web site at www.support.dell.com.

The affected notebooks include:

  • Latitude D400, D500, D505, D600, D800, X300
  • Inspiron 300M, 500M, 510M, 600M, I8500 and I8600

    3.    Problem: Dell is voluntarily recalling and offering free replacements for certain notebook batteries that were sold for use with some
            models of its' Latitude, Inspiron, and Precision notebooks.  It is possible for these batteries to overheat, which could pose a risk of
            a fire.  In addition, these batteries may have also been provided in response to service calls.  The batteries were shipped to
            customers from October 5, 2004 to October 13th, 2005.  The words "Dell" and "Made in Japan" or "Made in China" are printed on
            the back of the batteries.  The following battery models are subject to the recall: 

            3K590    C5340    X5308    F5132    U5882    U5867    6P922    C5446    C2603

            Batteries subject to the recall should not be used while awaiting a replacement battery from Dell.  You may continue to use your
            notebook computer using the AC adapter power cord originally provided with your notebook.

            Potentially affected batteries were sold with the following notebook  models or sold separately as second batteries:

  •    Latitude D410, D505, D510, D600, D800, D810
  •    Inspiron 510, 600m, 6000, 8600, 9200, 9300, XPS Gen 2
  •    Precision M20, M70

    4.    Problem: Dell is voluntarily recalling and offering free replacements for certain notebook batteries that were sold for use with
            models of it's Latitude, Inspiron, Precision, and XPS notebooks.  It is possible for these batteries to overheat, which could pose a
            risk of a fire.  In addition, these batteries may have also been provided in response to service calls.  The batteries were shipped to
            customers from April 2004 through July 2006.  These batteries were manufactured by Sony.

Fujitsu

  1. Problem: Fujitsu is recalling about 287,000 battery packs made by Sony for some of their model notebooks.  They run a risk of overheating and causing a fire. 

    The following notebooks and battery part #'s are affected:

    • LifeBook P150, P1510:  CP229720-01 lot 5701-6425, CP229725-01 lot 5704-6421
    • LifeBook P7120, P7120D: CP234019-01 lot 5915-6426, CP234003-01 lot 5Y11-6424
    • LifeBook C1320, C1320D, C1321, C1321D:  CP255100-01 lot 5624-6511, CP255108-01 lot 5628-5Y15
    • LifeBook S7020, S7020D, S7021, S7021D, S7025, S7025D:  CP267910-01 lot 5919-6407, CP267915-01 lot 5X04-6307
    • Q2010: CP283030-01 lot 6403-6412
    • T4210: CP293420-01 lot 6508-6510

Hewlett Packard Notebooks

  1. Problem: Hewlett-Packard is recalling about 135,000 battery packs for some HP and Compaq laptop computers because of reports they overheated and melted.  The lithium ion rechargeable battery packs bear a barcode label starting with GC, IA, L0 or L1.  They were sold from March 2004 through May 2005.  Consumers should stop using the battery packs and contact the company for a free replacement.  For more information, go to http://www.hp.com/support/.

  • HP Pavilion
  • Compaq Presario
  • Compaq Evo

Hewlett Packard (HP) Printers

  1. Problem: There is a voluntary recall of 2.5 million power cord sets made by Longwell Electronics that were sold with inkjet printers from Hewlett Packard.  The connector can break, exposing electrical contacts and posing a shock hazard to consumers.  The recall is being conducted to prevent the possibly of injury.  The gray two-wire power cord sets with a LS-7C connector have the name "Longwell" molded on the plug between the blades.  Department, computer, office and electronic stores including Best Buy, CompUSA, Costco, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples and Wal-Mart stores sold the printers with the Longwell cord sets nationwide between April 2001 and February 2002.  Consumers should stop using these printers immediately and contact HP for a free replacement cord.  For more information, consumers can contact HP at 877-917-4378 anytime or visit the firm's web site at www.hp.com.

    The affected printers include:

  • DeskJet 800 series, 900 series
  • Photosmart 1000 series, 1100 series, 1200 series, and 1300 series

IBM Notebooks

  1. Problem: IBM is recalling approximately 553,000 power adapters that shipped with certain models of its ThinkPad notebooks sold between January 1999 and August 2000.  The 56 watt adapters can overheat and melt, posing a fire and electrical shock hazard to users.  The adapters recalled contain part number 02K6549 on their labels.  Customers in the U.S. and Canada can call 800-410-5629 to obtain a replacement adapter.

The affected notebooks include:

  • ThinkPad i Series, ThinkPad 390 and ThinkPad 240 sold worldwide.
  • ThinkPad s Series sold in the Asia-Pacific region outside of Japan.

    2.    Problem: IBM and Lenovo are recalling 168,500 batteries.  The batteries will have an FRU part number and ASM part number.  If your battery matches the
           number below, you have a bad battery.  Contact Lenovo at 800-426-7378 or visit www.lenovo.com/batteryprogram for more information.

            The affected notebooks include models:

  • ThinkPad T43, T43p, T60, T60p, R51e, R52, R60, R60e, X60 and X60s

    The battery part numbers are:

  • ASM 92P1072 with FRU 92P1073
  • ASM 92P1088 with FRU 92P1089
  • ASM 92P1142 with FRU 92P1141
  • ASM 92P1170 with FRU 92P1169 or 93P5028
  • ASM 92P1174 with FRU 92P1173 or 93P5030

Sony Notebooks

  1. Problem: Sony is recalling 5,600 VAIO notebook computers that may have a defect in which users could receive a mild electric shock when connected to a phone line and the phone rings.  The affected notebooks were sold from June through July 2003.  These computers will have slow modem speeds, generally below 24k while using the notebook's adapter.  Consumers unsure of their modem speed can check it at the Sony PC support Web site: www.sony.com/pcsupport. Consumers with VAIO notebooks included in the recall should disconnect their modem from the phone line immediately, and contact Sony to arrange a free repair.  Sony will also extend the current limited warranty for repaired products to 2 years from the date of original purchase.  Call Sony at 800-880-9743 anytime or visit their Web site at www.sony.com/pcsupport.

The affected notebooks include:

  • VAIO PCG-FRV25 or PCG-FRV27

Toshiba Notebooks

  1. Problem: Potentially bad memory modules that may cause blue screens, lockups, and undetected memory corruption.  There is a utility that Toshiba has made available a utility to detect the error that can be found at www.toshibadirect.com. Consumers can call Toshiba at 866-544-1325 or visit: http://www.toshibadirect.com for more information.

The affected notebooks include:

  • TECRA S1, 9100, M1, M2
  • Satellite 2400, 2405, 1110, 1115, M30, M35
  • Satellite Pro M10, M15, M30
  • Portege R100, M200, M205
  • Dynabook T5, E6, V7, SS S7, SS 2100, E7, V8, V9, VX1, SS M200
  • Dynabook Satellite M10

    2.    Problem: Toshiba is recalling 340,000 notebook batteries involving its Satellite, Tecra, Portege, and Qosmio models.  There are too many affected models

Toshiba PDAs

  1. Problem: There is a problem with data loss if the battery is allowed to fully discharge or if the battery is disconnected from the unit.  If you have one of the recalled units with serial numbers 72014641L through 92041620L, contact Toshiba at 800-788-1653.  Toshiba will send packaging and pre-pay the shipping for the unit.  The company also recommends that you back up any data and return only the unit, not the cradle or power adapter.  Toshiba says those users who never let the battery run out, regularly back up data, never disconnect the battery, or always connect to an external power supply may continue to use the unit as is, if they wish.  More information is available at www.csd.toshiba.com.
